China’s Communist Party vows greater Democracy
A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Wang Jingqing, pledged today to increase intra-party democracy. This pledge came as delegates were being elected to a national congress to take place later in the year. The elected delegates will represent 82 million party members. The CPC also for the first time used a “multi-candidate method” when initially working out lists of candidates for elections. It was noted that there is more choice in delegates this year than in either of the congress’ of 2002 and 2007. Additionally, transparency of the CPC is thought to have improved. Future efforts are to include more grassroot efforts to elect delegates and increasing rights of the party members.
